Printing color differences can be reduced by controlling artwork files, color standards, substrate batches, ink formulation, press settings, and approval procedures. Since kraft paper and woven packaging are not identical to screens or coated cards, physical reference samples are essential.
The final color is influenced by both the ink and the material beneath it. Brown kraft changes the appearance of light or transparent inks, while white kraft produces brighter results. Laminated woven fabric reflects light differently and may make the same color appear more vivid.
Surface roughness and absorbency also matter. Paper can absorb part of the ink, producing a softer result. Laminated material keeps more ink near the surface, increasing density and gloss.
For this reason, custom printed bags made from different substrates should not be expected to match perfectly without separate color adjustment.
Digital files display RGB light, while production printing normally uses spot colors or CMYK formulations. Monitor settings and office printers cannot serve as final production standards.
The approval process should use:
Confirmed artwork in the correct color mode
Standardized color codes where applicable
A printed proof on the intended bag material
An approved physical sample retained by both parties
Defined tolerance limits for repeat production
This “master sample” gives press operators a realistic target and gives purchasers an objective reference when evaluating bulk bags.
Many cases of printing color difference are caused by variation during production rather than incorrect artwork. Ink viscosity, mixing ratio, drying speed, printing pressure, machine speed, and ambient conditions can change color density.
Substrate variation is another source. Brown kraft from two production batches may have a slightly different base shade. Woven fabric and lamination gloss can also vary if raw-material specifications are not controlled.
Factories should record the main press settings and ink formulation used for approved production. Repeat orders can then begin from known parameters instead of rebuilding the color from memory.
Large backgrounds reveal color variation more easily than small logos or text. Uneven ink transfer can create light bands, pinholes, or differences between the center and edge of the printed area.
Designers can reduce unnecessary risk by avoiding extremely large solid coverage when it offers little branding value. Where solid backgrounds are essential, printing plates and ink transfer must be checked carefully during production.
Color should be reviewed under stable lighting because warm and cool light sources can make the same package appear different. Wet ink must be allowed to dry before final comparison.
Inspectors should compare samples from the beginning, middle, and end of the run. They should also check registration, ink adhesion, rubbing resistance, and whether graphics remain consistent across folds.
Some variation is unavoidable on industrial substrates, so acceptable limits should be agreed before mass production rather than debated after delivery.
A professional printed bag factory should receive the target bag material, artwork source file, color references, printing coverage, order quantity, and previous approved sample. Changing the substrate or lamination after color approval may require a new proof.
Provide these materials before plate making to arrange color matching, sample confirmation, and a controlled bulk-production quotation.
