Why Is the Valve Important During Filling?

Unlike an open-mouth bag, a valve bag has a small sleeve positioned at one corner. The operator or automatic applicator places this sleeve over the filling nozzle, allowing powder to enter without opening the entire top of the package.

This controlled opening limits the area through which dust can escape. After the target weight is reached, internal product pressure helps flatten and close the valve. Heat-sealable, ultrasonic-sealable, and tuck-in valves can be used when a stronger closure is required.

For paper valve bags, the valve width and length must match the filling spout. An oversized valve can leak or move during filling, while an undersized one may be difficult to mount and can restrict output.

Filling Efficiency Depends on Airflow

Fine powders displace a considerable amount of air as they enter the bag. When that air cannot escape quickly enough, the package inflates, filling speed drops, and bags may remain rounded rather than forming a stable block shape.

Effective venting can be achieved through controlled paper permeability, micro-perforations, channels between the paper plies, or a specially designed valve structure. The correct solution depends on particle size and dust behavior.

Manufacturers should avoid adding excessive ventilation simply to increase speed. Too many perforations may allow fine material to escape. Successful valve bag filling balances three factors:

  • Rapid product entry

  • Controlled air evacuation

  • Low dust emission

What Changes Can Be Seen on the Production Line?

A correctly designed valve bag can shorten bag placement and discharge cycles. It also eliminates the need to sew the entire top after filling, reducing an additional handling step.

The resulting package is generally compact and rectangular. This makes it easier to travel through checkweighers, flattening conveyors, metal detectors, and automatic palletizers. Uniform dimensions also improve pallet density and reduce movement during transport.

However, the bag alone cannot correct unstable filling equipment. Nozzle condition, feed pressure, target weight settings, and product moisture must remain controlled. Packaging and machinery should be tested as one complete system.

How Should A Valve Bag Be Specified?

Useful technical information includes the packed material, bulk density, target weight, filling temperature, output per hour, nozzle dimensions, and closure method. Buyers should also explain whether bags will be handled manually or by an automatic applicator.

Paper plies, grammage, valve material, pasted-end strength, and any PE barrier can then be selected around the application. Cement, mortar, gypsum, pigments, feed, and food ingredients may all require different configurations even when bag dimensions appear similar.

Testing Before Continuous Production

An experienced industrial bag supplier should provide samples for testing on the intended filling line. The trial should measure filling time, dust around the spout, weight consistency, valve closure, bag shape, and resistance to normal dropping.

Filled bags should also be stacked using the planned pallet pattern. This reveals whether trapped air or dimensional variation affects load stability.
